Apple Wallet

The loyalty card in Apple Wallet: how a guest adds it, what it shows, how it updates, and what staff do at the counter to give a reward.

A guest with an iPhone can keep your loyalty card in Apple Wallet. It is the same card as the one in the Maska web wallet: the same stamps, the same rewards and the same QR code. Once it is added, the guest does not need to open the web wallet again.

Android phones show Add to Google Wallet with a SOON chip. Google Wallet is not live yet.

For guests

Adding the card

  1. Open wallet.maska.co.in in Safari, or open the Maska wallet from the home screen.
  2. Tap the card to open it.
  3. Tap Add to Apple Wallet, then Add.

The card now sits in Apple Wallet. The web wallet shows In Apple Wallet on that card. To put it on a second phone or an iPad, tap the button again; it is captioned Add to another phone.

If the wallet was opened from inside another app, such as WhatsApp or Instagram, the button is not shown. The line reads Open this page in Safari to add your card. Open the same link in Safari and the button appears.

A paused card has no button, because there is nothing on it to use.

What the card shows

On the front:

  • Your brand logo at the top, on the card colour you chose.
  • Stamps, for example 7 of 10.
  • The stamps as a row of round discs across the card, in one row or two even rows. Earned stamps are filled in your accent colour with the stamp icon. The rest are plain discs.
  • Stamps to reward: how many more stamps until the next reward, for example 3 stamps, or Ready when the card is full.
  • Rewards: 0, or how many are ready, for example 2 ready.
  • Use by: only when a ready reward has an end date. With more than one ready, it reads Use one by and shows the soonest date.
  • The QR code, with Think Maska under it. The code itself is never printed as text.

On the back (tap the … button, then Pass Details):

Line What it says
Member The guest’s name, if they gave one.
Member code A short code the counter can read if the camera will not scan.
How to earn For example “1 stamp per visit, up to 2 a day, on bills of ₹200 or more.”
Stamps expire Only if your card has an expiry: “If you don’t get a stamp for 60 days, you lose your oldest stamp.”
Reward “Collect 10 stamps to get Free coffee.”
Use your reward “Show this card and ask for it. We’ll send a code to your WhatsApp.”
Our outlets Up to ten outlets that have a map pin, each with a link to Maps.
Manage your card A link to the web wallet.
Help Your brand’s phone number, if you set one.
Loyalty by Maska A link to wallet.maska.co.in.

How the card updates

The card updates by itself, usually within a few seconds of a stamp or a reward at the counter. There is nothing to refresh.

When something changes, the phone shows a short note on the lock screen:

  • After a stamp: Stamp added. You have 7 of 10.
  • When a reward is ready: Your reward is ready: Free coffee. You have 1 ready.

A stamp that is taken away (a stamp expiring, or a bill that is cancelled) changes the card with no note.

Near an outlet

When the guest is close to one of your outlets, the card can show on the lock screen with the line “Your brand is near you. Show this card for a stamp.” This only works for outlets that have a map pin. See Setting outlet pins below.

Using a reward

  1. Show the card at the counter and ask for the reward.
  2. Staff scan the card and tap to send a code.
  3. A 4-digit code arrives on the guest’s WhatsApp.
  4. Tell the code to staff. They type it in, and the reward is used.

The code works for 30 minutes. It is only for this reward. Do not share it with anyone who is not at the counter with you.

If the card is paused or removed

If a card is paused, the Apple Wallet card shows This card is no longer active. on the back and has no QR code. If the card is removed from the web wallet, it also stops working in Apple Wallet. Stamps are safe: scanning the brand’s sign-up QR again brings the card back.

For your team

At the counter

Staff do the same thing for every guest, whether the card is in Apple Wallet or in the web wallet. The QR code is the same in both.

To give a stamp: scan the card. On POS and captain the guest goes on the bill and the stamp comes when the bill is settled. On the Scanner, one scan is one stamp.

To give a reward: every reward needs a WhatsApp code, on POS, captain and the Scanner.

  1. Scan the card, or find the guest by phone.
  2. Tap Redeem (on the Scanner, Give the reward).
  3. Tap Send code. The screen says Code sent to WhatsApp ending 4821. Ask the guest for it.
  4. Type the 4-digit code in Code from WhatsApp, then tap Redeem on POS, Put on the bill on captain, or Give the reward on the Scanner.

If something goes wrong, the screen says what to do:

Screen says What to do
Wrong code. 2 tries left. Ask the guest to read it again.
Code stopped working. Send a new one. Three wrong tries. Send a new code.
Code is too old. Send a new one. More than 30 minutes passed. Send a new code.
The WhatsApp message did not go. Check the number, or try again.
Too many wrong codes today. The reward can be used tomorrow.
Codes cannot be sent right now. Try again later.
Wait 20 minutes, then send again. Too many codes sent. Wait, then tap Send again.

If the guest did not get the code, Send again can be tapped after 30 seconds. See At the counter for the full counter flow.

Setting outlet pins

The lock-screen reminder near an outlet needs that outlet’s place on the map. Set it once per outlet on Stores:

  1. On the store card, tap Set location.
  2. Give the location in one of three ways:
    • Paste a Google Maps link from a computer. This link carries the exact pin.
    • Paste a share link from the Google Maps phone app (Share, then Copy link). This link has no pin in it, so Maska looks up the address on OpenStreetMap. The panel says Found from the address. Check the pin. Tap Open in Maps and make sure the pin is on your outlet.
    • Use my location, while standing inside the outlet with a phone or tablet.
  3. Tap Open in Maps to check the point, then Save location.

The store card then reads Location set. Open in Maps. The pin is also used for the Maps link under Our outlets on the back of the card. An outlet with no pin is not listed there.

Guests’ cards update by themselves after you save, change or remove a pin.

Where the card’s details come from

On the card Set on
Colour, finish, logo, stamp icon Card design
Stamps per card, reward, daily limit, minimum bill, stamp expiry Programme rules
Outlets and their Maps links Stores, linked outlets with a map pin
Help phone number Settings
Brand name Your account settings
Member name The guest’s own profile

A change on any of these screens reaches the Apple Wallet card on its own. There is no separate step.

How your card design carries over

  • Card colour is the card’s background. A custom colour works too.
  • Accent fills the earned stamps.
  • Metallic adds a brushed sheen behind the stamps. Matte has none.
  • Logo is shown at the top. With no logo, the card shows a monogram of your first letter.
  • Stamp icon is drawn in every earned stamp. If you picked a food emoji, the Apple Wallet card shows a matching line icon instead (for example a coffee cup for the coffee emoji). The web wallet still shows the emoji.
